Here’s how to draw a unicorn step-by-step.

Step #1: How To Draw A Unicorn Step-By-Step: Draw The Head And Torso

In this step, you will be drawing two lines – one for the unicorn face, the other for the unicorn upper body. For the face, draw a shape that looks like a bottle on its side or a bowling pin on its side. You can also see this step on “How To Draw A Unicorn Head For Kids.

Now draw a curved line for the unicorn’s chest. Notice how the lines vary in thickness. This adds interest to the shapes.

Step 2: Draw The Unicorn Legs

Though you will be drawing two legs, only one will be completely visible. Draw the leg closest in the drawing first, then draw the second leg slightly above it, hiding the hoof behind the first leg.

Step 3: Draw The Rear Leg

You will be drawing only the leg closest to you for right now. Beside being a leg, it also forms the back of the unicorn’s body. Begin with a sweeping arc to represent the unicorn’s rear end and thigh. Begin a second line at the joint at the rear of the leg. This joint is called the “hock.” Draw down to the ankle and hoof of the unicorn, and draw back up to create the rest of the leg and thigh.

Step 4: Draw The Unicorn Horn

You can draw the unicorn’s horn as a pointy cone filled with diagonal lines, or by drawing individual segments. For a closer look at the segment drawing technique, see “How To Draw A Unicorn Face For Kids,” or “How To Draw A Unicorn Head For Kids.”

Step 5: Draw The Unicorn Mane, Tail, And Remaining Leg

The next parts of the unicorn drawing are meant to show movement. Begin by drawing the unicorn’s tail. If the unicorn were rearing up even higher, the tail would point more directly toward the ground. If the unicorn were simply standing or running froward, the tail would point more behind.

Draw the second rear leg beside the first one, but make it shorter. This will make the unicorn appear to be standing in 2D on a piece of ground (see this cool video on drawing in 2D and 3D).

Now draw the unicorn’s mane. You can copy the lines above, trace them, or see “How To Draw A Unicorn Head For Kids,” which has the steps broken down .

Step 6: Draw The Unicorn Eyes, Nostrils, and Hair And Hoof Details

First draw the unicorn eye and nostrils. The closed eye above will be easy to draw, but an open eye will work too.

Now draw the nostrils, making them a little narrow, close together, and placed toward the very front of the nose. This will help the face to appear a little angled.

Next, draw curvy lines near the bottom of the legs to create hoofs.

Finally, draw flowing lines in the mane and tail.  This will bring a 2D appearance to these areas.

How To Draw A Unicorn Step-by-Step: Coloring And Highlights

How To Draw A Unicorn Step-by-Step: Example

Our step-by-step unicorn can be colored any way you want. For a final touch, try experimenting with the way that light would reflect off the face, legs, horn, body, and tail. To do this, try drawing streaks and slivers of light shaded colors over your already-colored drawing, or just leave areas uncolored as you color in the rest of your outlines.
